At the City of D’Iberville’s March 13th Tree-Give-A-Way, the demand for trees far outnumbered the trees on hand and exceeded the expectations of city officials. Allowing citizens to fill out forms in advance and reserve 4 trees per person, city officials quickly had all 150 trees reserved before Saturday morning.

Councilwoman Brenda Broussard and Parks and Recreation Director Mike Mullins decided to give citizens another chance and allowed them to fill out pre-orders on Saturday. Based on the demand of those orders, he ordered an additional 747 trees and arranged with citizens to pick them up. Broussard and Mullins have been hosting Tree Give-A-Ways since 2006. They said they’ve never seen demand for trees so high.

The trees come from the Land Trust and the Give-A-Ways around the Gulf Coast are part of their Replant South Mississippi program. The goal of the program is to restore the Gulf Coast’s tree canopy, since it was severly damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The program is funded in part by the Mississippi Forestry Commission and in partnership with the Sun  Herald.
